The History of The Island Players
The outside of The Casino Theatre
For 68 years, The Island Players has been a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing artistic experiences for the community of St. Simons Island and its neighboring cities through the presentation of live stage productions.
To accomplish these goals, we present four mainstage performances, a Christmas production, and a summer youth workshop each year.
The Island Players has a long history on St Simons Island.
“Call Me Madam” The Island Players First Musical 1965-1966
Established in 1956, The Island Players produced its first show The Moon is Blue and presented it at the King and Prince Hotel. A few years later in 1959, we moved our productions from the hotel to the Airport Playhouse at Malcolm McKinnon Airport.
The 1960’s brought many new additions to The Island Players. We started performing a few shows at The Casino Theatre in 1962, and began selling season memberships in the same year. Our first musical Call Me Madam was later produced in 1966.
“Hello Dolly” 2016-2017
A little over a decade after performing shows at The Casino Theatre, The Island Players began to lease out the building in 1973 making it the permanent home for all of our stage productions. In the same year, we added an apron to the stage and renovated the projection booth into a lighting and sound booth to make it a suitable place to hold live theatre shows.
